The empirical nature of science has allowed for its success in solving great human problems and in understanding the world around us. Real life data and observations lead to such findings, which only then can be translated into theory. A theory without data is merely a hypothesis waiting to be shown true through observation. If you start with a theory and then try to prove it, you are taking a biased position and setting out to complete an impossible task. Nothing can be proven in science, only accepted until shown otherwise. Immanuel Kant in his Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals and David Hume in his An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals each take a very different approach in establishing their moral theory. This is very much like what Kant has done. He accepts something as true and then painstakingly works to prove it without allowing for the possibility of its falsehood. The ability of humans for pure reason is not an observed scientific truth, but instead an idealistic theory created to set us apart from our animal counterparts. My Life Its Just Me Essay 18 years ago, I was born into the Masters’ family. I had a wonderful mom and the best dad in the world. My dad was honestly my first love; I was the apple of his eye. It sounds weird, but if you would’ve seen how close he and I were, you would know where I was coming from with what I was trying to say. I wasn’t the only one who fell in love with my dad. My Mom did too. I always loved to watch them get along, and when they fought, it wasn’t for long. They were in love, and that love made me, and they loved me as much as they loved each other. My dad and I did so much together while mom was at work. It’s the type of relationship that could honestly make a lot of people jealous. He was not, JUST my father. He was also my best friend. I could joke around with him about anything, he was always there to make me laugh and he always made me feel like I was the most important thing to him in the world. I mean being his ONLY daughter, of course I was, but he always gave his attention to my mom too. No one was ever left out in my house. I can’t tell you how many memories we had in that house. But it felt like I only had a short time with my dad, he left on March 4, 2006. I was only 10, but because I couldn’t really remember any memories from when I was a baby, it felt like I only spent about 5 years with him. At first I was so sad, and heart broken, because I had just lost my best friend. After a while, I got so angry and selfish, I would occasionally think â€Å"Why? Why did you abandon me and my mom? We both need you, I know I need you, you were my first friend, and the best thing that has ever happened to me. † The years after that were basically hell. I was always angry, and depressed. I didn’t know what to think. I started acting out with my mom, I stopped listening, and I stopped caring. As I grew older, I rebelled more and more each and every day. On a good day, my mom and I would get along, and I was starting to pick myself up and get back to being me, but then someone new came into the picture, and when that happened, all I could think was my mom just abandoned her love for my dad and moved on to someone else. I was young, I wanted my dad back, and I wasn’t ready for someone new to be in the picture. I made myself look like a jackass for so long because of my anger. Soon enough, I got a long with my mom’s new boyfriend, Eric. He and I would basically act like siblings. We would wrestle, joke around, pull pranks on each other, and sometimes my mom. We got yelled at so much when we did that, but it was funny as hell. My time with my mom was longer than with my dad. But it feels like I spent more time arguing with my mom and rebelling than actually spending time with her. 18 years was a good run, but it wasn’t good enough, because mom passed away on June 16, 2014, and once again I was back to being angry at the world and feeling abandoned. I was just so pissed and depressed that I did so much to push everyone away from me. I shut people out, I did so much to seclude myself from everyone. Then I started to regret it, I started to regret everything that I have ever done in my life to anything and anyone. Because of everything that happened over the course of 18 years, I’ve lost friends, gained some, but still find ways of pushing them away. I will always regret everything. The biggest thing I regret is being selfish and thinking my parents abandoned me when they didn’t. It’s me who makes everyone else feel abandoned. Learn What a Feature Story Is Ask most people what a feature story is, and theyll say something soft and puffy, written for the arts or fashion section of a newspaper or website. But in fact, features can be about any subject, from the fluffiest lifestyle piece to the toughest investigative report. And features arent just found in the back pages of the paper, the ones that focus on things like home decor and music reviews. In fact, features are found in every section of the paper, from news to business to sports. In fact, if you go through a typical newspaper from front to back on any given day, chances are the majority of the stories will be written in a feature-oriented style. The same is true on most news websites. So we know what features arent; but what are they? Feature stories arent defined so much by subject matter as they are by the style in which they are written. In other words, anything written in a feature-oriented way is a feature story. These are the characteristics that distinguish feature stories from hard news: The Lede A feature lede doesnt have to have the who, what, where, when and why in the very first paragraph, the way a hard-news lede does. Instead, a feature lede can use description or an anecdote to set up the story. And a feature lede can run for several paragraphs instead of just one. Pace Feature stories often employ a more leisurely pace than news stories. Features take time to tell a story, instead of rushing through it the way news stories often seem to do. Length Taking more time to tell a story means using more space, which is why features are usually, though not always, longer than hard news articles. A Focus on the Human Element If news stories tend to focus on events, then features tend to focus more on people. Features are designed to bring the human element into the picture, which is why many editors call features people stories. So if a hard news story recounts how 1,000 people are being laid off from a local factory, a feature story might focus on just one of those workers, portraying their grief at losing their job. Other Elements of Feature Articles Feature articles also include more of the elements that are used in traditional storytelling - description, scene-setting, quotes and background information. Both fiction and non-fiction writers often say their aim is to  have readers paint a visual portrait in their minds of what is happening in a story. Thats also the goal of feature writing. A good feature writer does anything she can to get readers engaged with her story, whether by describing a place or a person, setting a scene or using colorful quotes. An Example: The Man Who Played Violin in the Subway To demonstrate what were talking about, take a look at the first few paragraphs of this story by Gene Weingarten of The Washington Post about a world-class violinist who, as an experiment, played beautiful music in crowded subway stations. Note the expert use of the feature-oriented lede, the leisurely pace and length, and the focus on the human element.
