Leadership Vs. Positional Leadership - 785 Words

CM3100-Week One-Leadership vs. Positional Leadership Discussion The questions asked, in our textbook, are â€Å"What is a leader? And how does leadership work?† (Maxwell, 2011, p. 2). According to John Maxwell (2011) â€Å"Unfortunately, people’s usual answers to those questions are not very helpful . . . The conclusion I came to early on is that leadership is influence. If people can increase their influence with others, they can lead more effectively† (p. 2). Mr. Maxwell and I seem to agree that the answer to those questions, as well as determining a baseline for a definition of a leader, depends on who you are asking. Jorge Cuervo provided me with his baseline concept and stated, â€Å"A leader is the person that receives from others the trust to guide them in the pursuit of what they feel is the best possible solution from a specific initial context† (Cuervo, 2015, p. 1). Mr. Cuervo breaks down his definition by giving an expository explanation of his statement. I found it to be a very insightful article on the subject. I also found it to be in agreement contextually with Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Couch’s definition, even though Mr. Cuervo uses different words to say that a good leader is a person who influences others. My response to the questions at hand is that being able to influence others to come into agreement with a common goal and become motivated to achieve that common goal, not so much individually, but collectively is the baseline for leadership.
